Classics op Zondag is the Sunday afternoon counterpart to Garden Party, and it takes things a good deal calmer. Annelies Smit spends these three hours on timeless material: classic soul, singer-songwriters, orchestral pop, ballads and the standards that keep turning up in films decades after they were first recorded. Records are given room to breathe and the running order never feels rushed or padded out.
Sunday afternoon has a particular weight to it. The weekend is not over yet, but it is clearly heading that way, and the show leans into that feeling rather than fighting it. Annelies tells the occasional story behind a record, points out who wrote what for whom, and reads out listener messages between the tracks. It suits a long lunch, a quiet house, a walk in the cold or an afternoon of doing very little on purpose. Classics op Zondag airs on Sunday from 12:00 to 15:00.
